FUNCHAL · LIDO · LOCAL GUIDE
10 km of ocean-front promenade, heated pools with sea water, dozens of restaurants, and the best morning walk in Madeira.
Lido is the modern, ocean-facing part of Funchal — the strip between the Old Town and Praia Formosa. It's where the 5-star hotels are, where the promenade runs along the sea, and where most visitors end up staying.
What's different from the Old Town: no cobblestones, wider streets, calmer, quieter at night. What's the same: still 15 min from downtown Funchal, still walking distance to beaches and restaurants.
A continuous 10 km ocean walk — from the Lido complex west to Praia Formosa and the harbour of Camara de Lobos. Paved, flat, well-lit. Morning runners, evening walkers, sunset photographers.
Public ocean-water pools with direct sea access. Heated in winter. Entry €5-7. Sunbeds and umbrellas available.
Small lido further west. Quiet, local, cheaper. Great for morning swims before the crowds.
Pebble beach, dark volcanic sand, ocean waves. About 2 km west along the promenade. Free access.
Natural ocean pool near Praia Formosa. Popular for snorkelling.
